Meme: 10 favorite characters

Okay, this one sounds fun. Favorite characters in 10 different fandoms.

1. Fullmetal Alchemist. Roy. I mean, Ed is huge fun to write, and so is Al when he gets his snark on, but Roy is my most reliable fic-fodder character, plotting creature that he is.

2. Prince of Tennis. Probably Yukimura, with Rikkai as a whole coming close second. They’re just so much fun to write about as a team; tasty dynamics everywhere, especially with the angst-lever to crack it all open.

3. Bleach. Hm. This one is actually a little difficult. I mean, in absolute terms, Rukia, but, again, mostly Rukia in relation to Ichigo and Orihime and Renji. Close second place is split by Byakyua and Hirako Shinji, despite the second’s late appearance.

4. Kuroko no Basuke. Kuroko, hands down, often in relation to Kagami, but also in relation to the other Miracle-idiots. No one can lay the straight-faced smackdown like Kuroko.

5. Angel Sanctuary. Mad Hatter, with Kira following close behind. I have a soft spot for complex motivation, in case that wasn’t obvious.

6. Naruto. Kakashi, closely followed by Sakura, albeit usually in the key of “omfg, move over and let me drive” given that canon gives them both a pretty raw deal, character-development-wise.

7. 07-Ghost. Frau. I also have a /huge/ soft spot for Teito and Ouka, and everything they might make of their world, but Frau is the most fun to play with.

8. Katekyou Hitman Reborn. Gokudera is entertainingly highstrung, but the more I dug into it, the more Squalo showed up with a bagful of plot and emotional porn.

9. GetBackers. Kazuki, especially in relation to Saizou, Toshiki, Sakura, and Juubei. Also with the emotional porn and fix-it urges.

10. Nirvana in Fire. Lin Shu/Mei Changsu, yes, all the way. A type, I can haz it, and it’s called Magnificent Bastards.

In conclusion, I clearly like the ones who smile politely all the while they’re getting a nice, iron grip on everything around them. Though also the ones whose central motivation is devotion.

Don't know much about history
Don't know much about theology
Don't know much 'bout how to write a book
Don't know how to cite the quotes I took
But I know all that I say must be true
And I know if you believed it, too
What a wonderful world this would be

Don't know much about geography
Don't know much sociology
Don't know how to understand folklore
Don't know what a reference book is for
But I do know that one god is bad
And if we'd kept the goddess we once had
What a wonderful world this would be

Now, I don't claim to be a goddess
But I'm tryin' to be
For maybe if I'm a goddess, people
You'll all worship me.

Don't know much about history
Don't know much about technology
Don't know much...

[personal profile] rosepsyche's paean to the Power of Story is also quoteworthy:

I have to call "bull" on Antiope's reasoning that art and music are inferior because they are "not alive" for another reason. No, such creations aren't living, breathing things. However (and I apologize if this gets a bit corny), the best of them can seem as if they are alive, get us invested in their characters, have us cheering about their triumphs and crying over their tragedies. They are just as valuable in their own way for their ability to entertain, to inspire, to teach, to help us grow and develop by seeing the world from a new point of view, and I don't think anyone involved in creating them would appreciate being told that their work can never compare to something that was squeezed out of a vagina.

You guys, 19 fic recs posts is a lot of posts. This is actually the longest I've been in any one primary fandom. Three and a half years!!

Anyway, here is fic! A bunch of the fics in this list were ones I couldn't believe I hadn't recced before, like surely I had? But I hadn't?? But better late than never. And then there's some brand new stuff as well.

Title: All the Things Money Can't Buy
Characters/Pairings: Shiro and Keith, Allura
Summary: Keith just needs a little help with the rent; Shiro's just a little lonely. This is just a brief, mutually beneficial financial arrangement, that's all. Really.
Notes: This is my entry for the Sheith Big Bang. I will be editing in the art shortly. I was lucky enough to be paired with two artists, Mishy of Mishy Draws and Liz of the comic Adrastus. 45,618 words; adult for smut.

If he were the melodramatic type, he'd be asking himself how he'd gotten himself into this mess, but Keith is too pragmatic for that. He knows exactly how he got to this place: it's called having a short temper and no patience for bullshit, which make for a really bad combination with an asshole boss who never liked him to begin with, even before Keith had called him out for playing favorites with the other clerks. )

Some Lesser-Known Fairytales

I was researching Grimms' Fairy Tales for a certain upcoming Halloween party, hoping inspiration for a costume would strike (no luck yet), and was reminded of some of my favourite bizarre tales, so I am retelling them in short form below. (Links go to Wikipedia.)

The Wonderful Musician (Aarne-Thompson type 151, "music lessons for wild animals")

A fiddler wanders through the woods, looking for someone who will appreciate his music. He attracts the attentions of a wolf, fox and a hare, but is not interested in a harem of adorable animal friends and tricks them into trapping themselves.

Eventually he finds an appreciative woodcutter, the kind of company he was seeking (if you know what I mean), who helpfully protects the fiddler from the escaped and vengeful animals.

The fiddler plays the woodcutter one more song to thank him and wanders on (like a cad).

The Water Nixie (Aarne-Thompson type 313A, "the girl helps the hero flee and revolves about a transformation chase")

A brother and sister fall into a well, where they are captured by a nixie who puts them to work. Fortunately, they're able to escape on Sunday while the nixie is at church.

The nixie.

At church.

She chases them, but luckily they are able to use a collection of ordinary household items which transform into nigh-impassable mountains to escape.

The Devil and his Grandmother (Aarne-Thompson type 812, "the devil's riddle")

Three soldier deserters make a deal with the Devil (who is masquerading as a dragon, because that's cool) to escape execution, who gives them a magic whip and a promise that in 7 years, he would take them to hell unless they could solve his riddle.

Fortunately one of them is able to find the Devil's grandmother, who gives him the solution to the riddle. So they get to keep the whip and escape.

--

In all seriousness, go to Wikipedia and check out the source links for these, because all of the stories have some neat imagery that's worth reading. (And I assume that's the real point of them. They just sound cool.)

They close tomorrow so hurry and get your nominations in!

Mine are:

Witcher: Geralt, Emhyr, Ciri, Dandelion (duh)

Dragonriders of Pern: Menolly, Robinton (I totally want Menolly/Robinton NOT SORRY)

Dune (the book): Paul, Jessica, Stilgar, Feyd -- I don't know exactly what I want here, I think I want some outsider POV on Paul maybe?

My runners-up were:

Rome: Pullo, Vorenus, maybe Octavian -- man, I would love a story that undid what the show did to Octavian in S2 so much

Gladiator: Maximus, Commodus

Brimstone: Ezekiel, The Devil

Dungeons and Dragons Cartoon: Eric, Hank, Sheila, Venger

Battle of the Planets: Mark, Jason

and my perennial hope-springs-eternal Dracula: the Series: Lucard (hope doesn't really spring very far lol)

I am totally not mentioning these here in hopes that someone has a spare nom they wouldn't mind using on one of these. ;)

It seems that Starbucks is offering sandwiches with Cage Free Egg Whites. Personally, I never keep my egg whites in cages. Usually keeping them in their shells works just fine.

Hello dear Trick or Treater! Thank you for writing/arting for me!

Except where noted, please feel free to use any of my general likes in any combination and to mix/match/add them to my fandom-specific prompts as you like. I also have a list of Horror/Spooky Likes; if we matched on Treat rather than Trick, please be assured that I would enjoy those likes in less creepy/horrific circumstances (except maybe the cannibalism and hunted for sport? though if you have a fluffy cannibalism/hunted for sport idea, go for it!).

You may also want to browse my prompts from last year or my dear author letter tag for more prompts/things I like. (My DNWs and Likes have changed over the years, so please refer to this letter if there are conflicts.)

I only requested Fanart for Sleeping Beauty, but I would be open to extra art gifts for any of my requested fandoms. I am also open to both Tricks and Treats in extra gifts.
